I take a different approach to the first two years of introductory Latin than many other programs. Specifically, I aim to create a large working vocabulary and quick, confident sight reading ability. Consequently grammatical subtleties are not stressed in this course, but are saved for later levels after the student has acquired the ability to understand large, coherent blocks of Latin text in a more-or-less “literal” manner. I have used this approach for several years in school classrooms, and have had much success attaining the program goals. I have also seen a much higher level of student enjoyment of Latin than in traditional programs.
The format of the course will be: occasional short audio lectures, assigned class work due on seminar days, and two 1-hour online seminars per week. The course provides credit for Logic. The textbook for this course is Hans Orberg’s Lingua Latina: Familia Romana.
