I Peter 3:15-16 says:
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
Events over the last few years have seen our culture slide increasingly further into large-scale unbelief. More than ever before, Christians need a solid background in apologetics – the art of defending the faith.
However, the sheer number of fronts on which we find ourselves needing to give an answer today seems daunting. To avoid the phehis apologetics course, like all other courses here offered, is built on the ancient multum, non multa (“much, not many”) approach. I have restricted the range of issues covered to categories important to all Christians, and of particular relevance to ongoing cultural problems. The goal of this program is to use a handful of issues to develop and focus a general ability in the student to integrate faith and reason and present and defend the Faith both firmly and winsomely.
The course is built on close engagement with the following material:
- “General Apologetics” – a reader put together from public domain sources, introducing key terms and issues
- Ronald Mayer, Balanced Apologetics – a survey of Christian apologetics options that emphasizes common intellectual ground between believers
- Norman Geisler, Answering Islam – an in-depth exposition, analysis, and refuation of Islam, co-written by a Christian philosopher and an ex-Muslim
- J.P. Moreland, Jesus Under Fire – a collection of essays exploring the major skeptical attacks on the veracity of Jesus and the Gospel
The format of the course will be: occasional short audio lectures, assigned class work due on seminar days, and two 1-hour online seminars per week. The course provides credit for Apologetics / Bible / Religion.
