Classical Writing – 7th Grade

This course aims to begin preparing students for more advanced study of Rhetoric in high school.   By using the classical progymmasmata writing exercises, the course teaches students how to reason their way through a given topic, to treat it thoroughly from multiple angles, and to express their thoughts with increasing precision and winsomeness in order to persuade others.

The curriculum we use, offered through Classical Writing, is first rate and is highly integrated with a variety of classical topics and arguments.  As an added benefit, this course does not require any previous experience with rhetoric or the progymnasmata, but was expressly designed by Classical Writing to introduce Middle School students to the discipline.

As an introductory course, Classical Writing – 7th Grade requires two books, Aesop and Homer, shown below.  The format of the course will be: occasional short audio lectures, assigned class work due on seminar days, and two 1-hour online seminars per week.   The course provides credit for English / Composition / Rhetoric.   To preview the course material, click here (Classical Writing’s preview site)
