Like its predecessor, Classical Writing – 7th Grade, this course continues to prepare students for more advanced study of Rhetoric in high school. By using the classical progymmasmata writing exercises, the course teaches students how to reason their way through a given topic, to treat it thoroughly from multiple angles, and to express their thoughts with increasing precision and winsomeness in order to persuade others. An added benefit is that this course is designed to reinforce grammar skills by being integrated with the lessons in a free, older resource, Harvey’s Grammar.
The curriculum we use, offered through Classical Writing, is first rate and is highly integrated with a variety of classical topics and arguments. I recommend this course for students who have some experience with the progymnasmata already, but it is possible for advanced students to pick it up from scratch. Alternatively, an 8th grade student may profit more from taking the previous course first, which is linked above.
The format of the course will be: occasional short audio lectures, assigned class work due on seminar days, and two 1-hour online seminars per week. The course provides credit for English / Composition / Rhetoric. The required text for this course is Classical Writing’s Diogenes: Chreia.
